ISO 39001 Road traffic safety (RTS) management systems 

According to research by World Health Organization, it is estimated that around 1.3 million people are killed and 20 to 50 million are injured on roads around the world each year. The tremendous socio-economic and health impact brought by has raised growing awareness towards road traffic safety.

 

Published in 2012, ISO 39001 is an international standard that specifies requirements for Road traffic safety (RTS) management system. It enables organisations to reduce death and serious injuries related to road traffic crashes which it can influence through sustaining a road traffic safety management system. It also provides guidance to organisation implement good RTS management practices and aims to enable a more cost-effective use of the road traffic system. 

 

Core elements in ISO 39001 include development and implementation of an appropriate RTS policy and RTS objectives and action plans. Attention will also be grant to relevant legal and other requirements and those RTS related criteria that organisation identifies as controllable. This standard is applicable to public and private organisations that interact with the road traffic system, e.g. construction, property management and transport, storage and communication industry. By certifying against ISO 39001, organisation could demonstrate its commitment to ensure road traffic safety to other road users and also employees and to achieve societal goals.
